What to Expect in Handgun Training

If you’ve decided to begin handgun training, congratulations. That is a huge step in becoming a responsible handgun owner. On day one of your training course, you will typically cover the anatomy of a gun and how the firearm operates; get familiar with safe handling, loading, and unloading; and then head to the range for your first live-fire practice under supervision.

Anatomy of a Gun

The two most basic types of handguns are the pistol and revolver. Pistols are more common than revolvers. All modern handguns have 3 basic groups of parts.

  • Action – The action is also known as the trigger group. It contains the parts of the gun that fire the cartridges. Depending on the handgun, the action may have different components.
  • Frame – The frame is the part that also serves as the handle (or grip) of the handgun. Everything else on the gun is contained within it or connected to it.
  • Barrel – The barrel is the metal tube that the bullet travels through. Handguns have shorter barrels than rifles or shotguns because a handgun is designed specifically to be shot with one or two hands instead of placed against the shooter’s shoulder.

Other Basic Terminology to Know

Repeating handguns are those such as revolvers and semi-automatic pistols that hold more than one round of ammunition. A revolver uses a cylinder to store ammunition, and a semi-automatic pistol uses a removable magazine that fits inside the grip. Understanding these basics helps you better follow instructions during training and improves safe handling practices.

How Do Handguns Work?

All firearms, regardless of their other differences, operate using the same basic principles. When the trigger is pulled, a firing pin strikes the primer, the primer ignites the gunpowder, and then the burning powder creates pressure. That pressure pushes the bullet down the barrel and out the muzzle (or end). Modern training places a strong emphasis on safe handling, trigger discipline, and situational awareness before ever moving into live-fire exercises.

Getting to Know Your Handgun Equipment

Before using a gun, you will want to understand its operation. Spend time reviewing manuals and training materials to understand the different parts of your handgun fully. Once you have some time with your firearm, it’s best to attend a certified training course that teaches proper handling, safety procedures, and shooting fundamentals. You’ll also need to know how to clean it and how to store it properly in a safe, secure location. Depending on the course you take, you may practice with your own handgun, or the class may provide training firearms before transitioning to your personal equipment.

Body Positioning

There are several steps to learning proper handgun-shooting techniques. At the basic level, the fundamentals are aiming carefully, breathing steadily, squeezing the trigger smoothly, and following through after each shot. However, those fundamentals must also be combined with proper grip, stance, and sight alignment for accuracy. All of these will be covered in your class and reinforced through hands-on practice.
